“Coach” James Hughey

He worked with youth gangs, founded Twin City Athletic Association

James Hughey is a local youth organizer and community worker. On his own time and expense, “Coach” Hughey worked with ghetto youth to inspire them to improve themselves. His outstanding contribution was the pivotal roll he played in stopping the gang wars of the 1950’s and 60’s.

Hughey called meetings with gang leaders of the “Pirates, Pine Street Gang, Newtown and Booker T” and talked out differences. Boxing matches were arranged for supervised fights and recreational competition was set up through his Twin City Athletic Association. Combined, the efforts literally wiped out the neighborhood animosities between rival gangs.
