1st African-American loan officer for Monroe Building and Loan

As racial barriers began to fall in the 1970’s one area that was still off limits to Blacks was the area of finance. Monroe Building and Loan, a mortgage company in Monroe, hired Ms. Augurson as a loan officer. It was a significant appointment because it was generally believed that Blacks did not possess the degree of professionalism necessary for such jobs.

As the first Black, Ms.Augurson displayed a high degree of professionalism that won her the respect of her superiors. She was watched closely and scrutinized because of the prevailing beliefs about Blacks. She performed with honor and made it possible for other Blacks to follow her in positions of trust requiring high degrees of professionalism.
